Title: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 08, 2010, 11:35:15 AM After I had the rebuilt fiberglass Cobra R hood on there for the summer and was constantly asked if I was in another town....state....ect. I decided my car looked like others and was time for a change...AGAIN. New hood project and in current progress.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 08, 2010, 11:39:07 AM My 69 BOSS 429 Scoop is the latest. I have in the next few pics, mockup and mounting of the scoop. I have since then removed the scoop and marked and cut the hole in the hood and remounted it. More pics to follow next week!!!
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 08, 2010, 11:41:03 AM Couple more to check out. When this is completed I will paint it the satin black again. This color compliments the black Cobra wheels and black trim. Kinda sets it off a bit
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Green Machine on January 09, 2010, 06:54:15 AM That hood scoop is looking pretty good on there.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 11, 2010, 08:39:49 AM Thanks Carrie, Hopefully I'll have more pics this week with the next stages and progress.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: 1ATony on January 13, 2010, 10:54:25 AM This is coming along awesome.Looks great.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 14, 2010, 09:55:22 AM OK now. After measuring several times and marking the cut lines, out came the whizzer wheel and cut the hood. I filed off the rough edges but it really came out pretty darn clean and square. Closed the hood and shows the intake nicely.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 14, 2010, 09:59:06 AM After the metal was cleaned up, I D/A'd around the hole where the scopp would cover. Once the base paint was saned and prepped, I primed the hood and underside of the hole and sprayed it with the black I'm using for the complete hood. This way once the scoop was mounted for the final time, I wouldnt have to worry about getting the paint under the scoop!!!
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 14, 2010, 10:01:17 AM Once the paint was dry, I painted the underside of the scoop the same color black and mounted it for the final time. 7, 1/4 20 bolts secure this to the hood with lock washers.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 14, 2010, 10:11:24 AM Next step was hand sanding the scoop and hood. This was to prep the materials for the Mar Glass. I filled the seam all around the scoop with this. After this glass is sanded, it will be followed by probably 1 more glass filler and then to a skim coat of a high quality mud.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Tony on January 16, 2010, 07:25:26 PM The hood is coming out pretty good.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: badass98svt on January 24, 2010, 12:01:32 PM Looks to be coming out gret. keep us updated.
Why are you molding it into the hood though? Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 25, 2010, 11:31:53 AM I had to mold it to the hood because the scoop was molded for mostly flat hood so the front 2 inches of the scoop wernt even close to giving a finished look. This way here, when I'm at 145 MPH I dont have to worry about the bolts pulling out of the scoop and flying off the car :o
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 26, 2010, 11:21:41 AM OK so it required 2 levels of the short hair fiberglass and sanding to get a good foundation and form. I sanded the glass down and cleaned it up so there were no rough edges that would cause an issue with the next stages. All edges were feathered in and blended. The next step was applying the Gold Premium mud. I got this at Robbins auto parts. I get pretty much get all my body supplies from them. I feel they have better autobody items than advanced auto, pep boys and the rest of the food chain. Here you can see the mud that was applied. There are a couple thin layers here and will be used to finalize and smooth out the countours for the scoop to hood transition.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 26, 2010, 11:25:41 AM The scoop wasnt the best quality and I needed to glass and mud the inner points at the front of the scoop. That sucked cause there is no tools I could fit in there besides my hands to sand. Keep in mind I pretty much only work on this on Mondays nights. Im guessing about 2 more Mondays and she'll be ready for paint. I can't wait for the finished results
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on January 26, 2010, 11:33:27 AM are you going to have the air cleaner stick up through the hole to help get a colder air charge? or just having the hole to help push the heated air away from the engine?
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 26, 2010, 11:45:48 AM Its basically for heat reduction. It still has a FI setup but as you can see theres a large hole in the hood. The braces are still there so theres still no hood flex. I wanted to get the ram air system that comes out under the lower airdam. We'll see how that pans out.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on January 26, 2010, 11:48:50 AM cool cool... i wanted one for my stang to have the "shaker hood" setup but after seeing how they designed the "plumbing" for it on the sn's they just didnt look efficient to me...
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Green Machine on January 27, 2010, 10:31:36 PM That hood is looking pretty cool, nice job.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on January 28, 2010, 08:32:23 AM Thanks Green machine. I'll hopefully have pics early next week. Im almost done with the muddin. Then comes the primer guide coat and sanding. I'll be sure to get pics of that too.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: NastyFox on January 29, 2010, 08:22:37 PM Hey that hood look really good.At least it's differant
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on February 02, 2010, 09:34:04 AM Thanks Nasty. I had to put this Mondays progress on hold as there wasnt any. I sprained an ankle while Mtn Climbing Sat night around 11PM. Have to try and stay off it for a while. Will continue in a few days.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Mustang5L5 on February 02, 2010, 10:33:11 AM Is it just completely open the the engine bay below? Or is it sealed to the air cleaner only?
Just be carefull about blowing air directly into the bay from there as it will create a slight positive pressure inside the engine bay which may hurt airflow through the radiator at highway speeds. usually a negative pressure needs to be created to prevent building an "air wall" inside the bay. That's why most hood scoop types seal the aircleaner against the hood or seal out the main engine bay...in addition to keeping out water. Most cowl hoods are open at the rear to take advantage of the low pressure zone created before the windshield. This helps dramatically to "pull" air through the radiator and engine bay and help cool the car. It's why cowl hoods are so popular as they are the most effective way to cool a bay. I did a crapload of windtunnel testing in college. Was fun to see how simple shapes and sweeps play a huge role in aerodynamics. Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: badass98svt on February 02, 2010, 10:33:29 AM LOL Mtn. climbing at 11pm? that must be pretty cool. Do you see any creatures?
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on February 03, 2010, 09:30:18 AM Hey Mustang5L5, thanks for the details. Thats definatly some awsome info. That wind tunnel stuff must have been awsome. Good stuff to know when it comes to the automotive field!! It still has the FI and will either run a thru fender air intake or Kenne Bell Ram air under the chin. As for water, its never been out in the rain since Ive owned it.
Badass98svt, it was an amazing night. No animals to be seen. They wernt stupid. They were sleepin somewhere warm!! It was 5 degrees at the base at 7PM when we started, sub zero at the peak and 2 degrees at the base when we got back. The ice formations were great...running water off rocks frozen in time made for an uphill skating rink. Sucked comming down with a messed up ankle but I'll do it again!! Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Green Machine on February 07, 2010, 10:44:41 AM Hey how is your foot feeling?
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on February 10, 2010, 11:11:29 AM ankle is still wacked. Hurts a bit. Goin for second opinion to check for fractures before I start PT. No progress on the hood this week either. I'll get my ass in gear soon abd post updates again. Sorry for the delay......
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on February 10, 2010, 07:10:28 PM whatd u do that you think u broke ur foot?? think i must have missed it somewhere...
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on February 16, 2010, 08:18:57 AM Hey Sparky83...." I sprained an ankle while Mtn Climbing Sat night around 11PM. Have to try and stay off it for a while. Will continue in a few days."
Update, 2nd opinion says I need an MRI. Ligaments are torn causeing the bones in the ankle to be loose. I can walk on it but wearing a brace but the foot flops around when I let it hang. Pretty painful. Gonna see if I need surgery from the MRI. Hopefully not. Anywho's, I'll be working on the hood tonight. Watch for new pics soon!!!!! Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on February 16, 2010, 08:58:34 AM ouch man... definitely get that mri done.. that way ya dont do any permanent damage to it jic something else happened..
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on February 17, 2010, 04:24:15 PM OK back in action but slowly...I blocked out the side of the scoop and layed down the transition mud. This will blend the scoop to the hood smoothly like it was meant to be there. Next step is sanding.....AGAIN with a small pipe or roll of quarters to get the curve smooth.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on February 18, 2010, 05:56:58 AM lookin good man...
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 02, 2010, 08:55:12 AM OK guys, I had some real progress this Monday night on the hood. Got all the edges sanded, used red scratch filler putty, sanded that then applied a sealer primer to one side (ran out), lightly sanded that then applied a scratch filler/build primer on top of that. I was pretty fricken amazed.......I got pics and should be posted Wednesday this week. Picking up more sealer primer tonight and hopefully in the next week or so, the final layers of paint will be sprayed.
I left the original hood latch on this hood. The question is this: Do I add hood pins or no hood pins???? I need feedback so I can order them. Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on March 02, 2010, 11:41:17 AM hood pins add style imo 8)
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: MY-S281 on March 02, 2010, 12:05:10 PM I like Hood Pins also!~ Leaves one to imagine what kind of beast might be under the hood ! Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 02, 2010, 12:47:06 PM Yeah thats what I'm thinkin too. Should I leave the stock latch also?
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on March 02, 2010, 03:57:56 PM Yeah thats what I'm thinkin too. Should I leave the stock latch also? i would.. itll be your primary while the pins act as a secondary incase the stock one fails... least thats how id do it... Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: MY-S281 on March 03, 2010, 06:13:15 AM That sounds like a good idea !!
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Green Machine on March 03, 2010, 06:45:45 AM Brian, pin that hood down. My Steeda hood popped on me when I first bought it. I had installed just the factory latch, and it popped 2X while I was going like 30 down the road.I got lucky it didn't fly up.
Get the Ford Racing stainless steel hood pins, not the cheap parts store one, those rust and look like crap after a year. The Ford Racing hood pins are made on stainless steel. Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 03, 2010, 11:34:36 AM OK heres updated pics. I finished the left and right side off with a scratch filler putty, used a black guide coat and blocked out the sides. I then followed with a sealer primer. This seals the mud and fiberglass from absorbing the primers and paints giving you an irregular pattern with teh final stages of paint.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 03, 2010, 11:38:04 AM So as you may have noticed in tha last pics, my rings were on the hood scoop. This served as 2 purposes. You can tell the size of the scoop by the size of a ring AND the real reason they were there......NEVER sand a flat iten weraing rings. This can groove, scratch or mar the item in prep for painting. Here we have the sealer primer on the driver side.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 03, 2010, 11:40:50 AM I was checking to see how fluid like the curve was here. Looks pretty good. I primed the passenger side Tuesday night but didnt get new pics yet. We're almost there guys.....Going to Robbins this weekend to get the Satin Black paint and shop for some hood pins.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: MY-S281 on March 03, 2010, 05:20:13 PM Looking good~~ Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on March 09, 2010, 09:51:12 AM Comming to the end of an era ladies and gents. The hood is all in primer. Some wet sanding and finish prep work is needed. The final paint should be applied in the next couple weeks. Hood pins will follow.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: 1ATony on March 10, 2010, 02:31:48 PM Nice job the hood looks great
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on April 19, 2010, 01:55:22 PM We've reached a milestone here on this project and have come to an end. Thanks for all the feedback, followers and chat. Hope you guys like the finished product. Lemme know. Still need to install hood pins but shes drivable now so I'll see you guys around!!
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Sparky83 on April 19, 2010, 03:26:53 PM looks good man... is it painted to match the car or is it actually black??? reason i ask is cuz i know sometimes cameras can do color plays like that when the lighting hits them just right...
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on April 28, 2010, 09:14:00 AM The hood is painted a satin black, like the old mopar hoods. I dont know the color code that the car was painted before I got it but its not stock. I think its a 1 off paint someone mixed
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Green Machine on April 28, 2010, 09:43:18 AM Lucky you. It's a cool color but a pain to match.
Title: Re: Tired of the samo samo/Hood Projects Part II Post by: Stickit on May 06, 2010, 03:05:51 PM Yeah but with having a finished 1 off hood, I can pattent it and have it made in fiberglass. OK I'll keep dreamin Foxbodyconnection.com is not affiliated or endorsed by the Ford Motor Company or any of its subsidiaries.
